Live: IND Vs ENG 1st Test | Day 4 | Session 1 | Live Scores & Commentary | 2018 Series

This Test has been a joy to watch so far. It’s been a roller-coaster ride for both the teams. Virat Kohli fought and then Ishant Sharma made sure his captain’s efforts bore fruits as he bowled with real purpose to scalp five English wickets. This was the leader of the attack that India had been craving for. But then again, India let go of the advantage. After having England on the mat at 87/7 they allowed the hosts to add 93 runs for last three wickets. This is not to take anything away from Sam Curran who played a fantastic innings of 63 from 65 balls. But it’s a perennial problem that India have failed to solve — the lower-order headache.

And then the top-order failed again. And then the two batsmen that followed. No doubt they were done in by some brilliant swing bowling from the English pacers but it’s another long-standing problem they need to solve. India need 84 runs with five wickets in hand but they have their life insurance in the form of Kohli at the crease. He is again playing beautifully and seems unflustered by what’s happening at the other end.

The England bowlers will look to make the most of the early conditions and Kohli will be the key for the visitors. Against quality pace bowling, many go into a shell to try and see off the tough period but runs are crucial here and what Kohli will need to do is play his natural game. He has been brilliant with the running between the wickets in this match and he should continue to take those quick singles if not boundaries to make sure the scoreboard keeps ticking and India don’t go into a shell. He has been really busy out in the middle which automatically doesn’t allow the pressure to build. It frustrates the opposition and this is how he had taken the advantage away from England in the first innings.

The other batsmen need to follow suit. They don’t need to do anything extravagant. Dinesh Karthik has played well and looked assured at the crease. The duo has built a good little partnership. They need to carry forward the momentum on Day Four. Karthik, along with others, should make sure they stand their ground at the opposite end. Just support Kohli, who will do the rest.

India will have to earn those 84 runs and a positive attitude is the need of the hour.

The batting coach further said that the youngsters, from both the teams, can learn a few tricks looking at Kohli’s innings. “If the ball is swinging or turning, it poses a different challenge and you need to guts it out in the middle. There were batsmen on either side who did that – Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow and from our side the openers showed a lot of gumption in the first 10-12 overs and then you saw how Virat had to play through various phases where run making wasn’t that easy,” he said.

India got off to a good start after bundling out England for 287. Openers Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay stitched a 50-run partnership, after which the wickets started to fell in quick succession, and the visitors were eventually bowled out for 274. Bangar lamented the batting performance for the rest of the team and said that they should have capitalised after a good start.

“Once we got a good start, we should’ve capitalised on it. But the openers handled the new ball really well, and the angles that were created by Sam Curran – credit to him that he could create those angles,” he said.

With England losing Alastair Cook before the stumps, Bangar said that the match is evenly poised at the moment. “England is used to playing in these conditions and we don’t really play in these conditions too often, but the gap is a mere 18 [13] runs. Definitely, the game is really well placed and the wicket which we got close to the end of day’s play has put the game in a very, very good balance,” he said.

He further added that Kohli’s innings has brought the match to an even playfield. “At one stage we were staring down the barrel, and the gap was huge, but because of Virat’s brilliance and the commitment shown by the batsmen around him – maybe those contributions might not look too many from Hardik, Ashwin, Ishant, Umesh – they might not have scored runs, but they stitched together partnerships and supported Virat beautifully. Because of that it’s still even-stevens,” Bangar said.

England finished off the second day with a score of 9/1 at stumps, having a lead of 22 runs at stumps.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Is this the real Social Blade?
A: YES! We are a verified channel and you can see the stream embedded on the front page of SocialBlade.com

Q: Is Social Blade just one person or a company?
A: Social Blade was founded by Jason Urgo and he’s the one running the stream but we do have 4 other people on the team too (2 developers and 2 support). You can find the list here: https://socialblade.com/info/team

Q: Who do we support?
A: Social Blade aims to be as transparent and supportive of the entire YouTube community as possible. In that regard we think both PewDiePie and T-Series have accomplished a lot. We aren’t for either, but do think that the numbers are in T-Series’ favor at winning this battle in the end, at least as of the writing of this FAQ. PewDiePie wasn’t the first #1, and T-Series won’t be the last.

Q: Bots!!
A: Over the years YouTube has gotten REALLY good at detecting bots. It is HIGHLY unlikely any large youtube channel is botting. YouTube detects, removes, and shuts down channels for botting often.

Q: But you said when YouTube was down T-Series was getting subscribers!!
A: They were the most noticeable and easiest to give an example of a phenomena that was happening to everyone. We later RT’d someone who showed how it was done. Basically via the mobile app you could still subscribe even though everything else was down.

Q: Sub Gap???
A: Sub Gap is an indicator of which direction things are going. If you see the number above (and the graph to the right) going up it means PewDiePie’s lead is increasing (and the stream will go on longer). If the number is staying the same and the graph is leveled out it means they are increasing at the same rate. If the number is decreasing and the graph to the right is going down it means T-Series is making progress to take over the title of #1 most subscribed channel (with videos).

Q: How does the average table work?
A: Each entry in the table represents a “subs per minute” value, the only difference is how many data points are used to calculate it. For example the first col, the “1 minute average” col, we simply check how many subscribers the channel had a minute earlier and subtract it from the current number. For the other columns though we use more data points. For the one hour one for example we look how many subscribers the channel had an hour ago and subtract it from the current number. This gives us how many they got in the past hour but we then take that number and divide by 60 to get the averages subs per minute across the entire hour. So long story short, each data point represents how many subs per minute the channel is getting, just as you start looking at a longer period the number is slower to change, but also a bit more accurate.

And so to Trent Bridge. Just five days since they were routed inside fewer than two days of actual playing time at Lord’s, India find themselves in Nottingham fighting to stay alive in a series that currently appears to getting away from them.

England on the other hand are absolutely flying, fortunate perhaps that a dramatic change in this summer’s weather has handed them favourable conditions, but in no mood to squander them and hoping to ride the coattails of their swing bowlers all the way to a 5-0 whitewash.

India have looked all at sea against the likes of Anderson, Broad, Woakes, Stokes and Curran and now find themselves in the unwelcome position of having to win or draw in order to avoid surrendering the series – and at the traditionally swing friendly Trent Bridge, a venue England have only lost once at in the last decade.

Their chief concern remains the flimsiness of their batting card in this series when faced with the moving ball, and with little time to make adjustments between Tests, the odds of them turning that around currently look rather bleak. However, they were unfortunate at Lord’s that England got to bowl and bat with the conditions in their favour, and should that be reversed in Nottingham, then as the number one Test side in the world they should be extremely disappointed if significant improvements are not made.

Considering that as a team they are averaging less than 170 runs an innings in this series, changes to the batting line up seem inevitable, with it looking very likely that the exciting Rishabh Pant will come into the side to make his debut at the expense of Dinesh Karthik.

India have arguably made big selectorial mistakes when picking their bowling attacks for both Tests, compounding the error of playing only one spinner at Edgbaston by picking two at Lord’s. However their fast bowling options should at least be bolstered for this Test by the likely return to the side of Jasprit Bumrah – now all they need to do is manage to pick the right lineup.

England are fortunate that picking their lineup was about the biggest problem they faced in the build up, the exoneration of Ben Stokes and his subsequent restoration to their squad, leaving the selectors with a real dilemma ahead of this Test.

Ultimately they plumped for Stokes’ inclusion at the expense of Sam Curran, the Edgbaston man of the match extremely unfortunate to miss out, but perhaps always the most likely call once it became clear that the all round explosive talents of Stokes were going to be at Joe Root’s disposal once again.

It was a choice Root described as “one of the toughest decisions I’ve had to make as captain”, but it doesn’t seem like he ever had any real intention of not restoring his former vice-captain to the side immediately.

“I sat down with Ben and asked him where he was and he said he is desperate to play and there is no doubt in my mind that he is mentally ready to play,” said Root. “We assessed his fitness in training and he is good to go.”

It hasn’t garnered all that much attention, largely thanks to their glut of in form allrounders and the performance of their bowling attack, but England do still have huge question marks about their top order, with Keaton Jennings still yet to really convince, Alastair Cook’s form seemingly eternally quite patchy and a 20-year-old with no previous experience of batting at number four in county cricket, now doing so for his country in Tests.

With Bumrah seemingly set to return, and a more sensible configuration of bowlers than they’ve deployed in either of the first two Tests likely, India definitely still have the potential to cause England’s brittle batting lineup some serious problems – but until their batsmen step up, the time they have left to do so grows increasingly scarce.
